PAKET 4.0 BULLETIN NO 2 23rd November, 1990
To all PAKET users:
Incorrect Callsign displayed.
In the first Bulletin under the heading "Operational difficulties" I
forgot to mention another "problem" that has been mentioned a few times by
PAKET users. PAKET 4.0 displays the callsign of the station you are
connected to, but occasionally the displayed callsign is incorrect.
Because PAKET runs on plain vanilla TNCs, it does not use KISS or HOST
Modes. It relies on DATA flowing from the TNC to attempt to GUESS the TNC
status, and this is where I have a problem determining the callsign of the
station you are connected to.
PAKET looks for the "***Connected to" message to get the callsign to
display in the Header Line.
The problem occurs if that "Connected to" string appears in some other
data. PAKET gets confused and thinks it has found a new connection,
resulting in an incorrect callsign display. Unless I revert to HOST or
KISS modes, there is not a lot I can do about that.
Because of this problem, I have introduced the Alt-V facility to
interrogate the TNC, asking it to Verify the displayed callsign,
correcting it if necessary.
Work around:
You will probably recognise an incorrect callsign when you see it, so
press Alt-V and it should come good again.
